Moore’s not really at the top of his game here but Noir’s a solid entry in his works. The title, as he admits in the afterword, is a bit deceptive; this is pretty cheerful as noir goes. The characters mostly are a little less developed than usual. Still, a fun read.
What I liked best were the horrible kid’s insults:
“Why, I’ll bet my uncle Davey could take you out in the first round, ya macaroon.”
“I ain’t some kind of dirty mascarpone.”
“Try and get it, ya dirty manchego.”
“I didn’t tell them nothin’, the dirty marimbas.”
“You stinkin’ wallabies are in hot water now.”
“He’s got ya now, ya rotten backhoes.”
