On Mourdock

You, and your Senator too, certainly have the right to say and to believe that pregnancies from rape are “something God intended.” It is a stupid belief, a cruel belief, but you can believe it, and so can your Senator.

You can go further and believe that termination of such a pregnancy is not “something God intended” and that, therefore, it is morally wrong to do so. It is bad morality based on a stupid, cruel belief, but you can live by it, and so can your Senator.

What you and your Senator cannot do, and expect me to accept it, is to codify your bad morality based on a stupid, cruel belief as the law of the land, and to impose it upon those who believe otherwise.

So do I insist Mourdock should renounce his belief? No, of course not. Should he apologize for telling us what his beliefs are? No, not unless he really wants to. On the contrary, telling us he believes this does the voters of Indiana a great service. It provides a very important piece of information upon which to base their decision.

But should he attempt to inflict laws based on this belief on other people, people who do not believe a just God would demand a woman bear her rapist’s child, then I for one will fight him, hard.
