Brass and bass

Last night Kenny played trumpet in a band concert for the first time ever. Meanwhile I played bass clarinet in a band concert for the first time since 1973.

It was the school’s instrumental concert featuring the 4th grade band and the 5th/6th grade band — Kenny’s in the latter, and for this concert they decided to invite parents and other community members to join in. They sent out two pieces of music — “Voodoo Dance” and “Ancient Moon” both by Elliot Del Borgo — and had about 20 minutes of rehearsal for the guests an hour before the concert. I decided to make some use of that bass clarinet I bought about 5 years ago. Last time I played bass clarinet in a band concert was also a school band — my high school band, senior year. Been a while.

I sat almost behind Kenny and grabbed a phone photo during a long rest:

It was fun.

We enjoyed the rest of the concert too, which included “Fresh Trash” (for percussionists playing trash cans) and “The Pink Panther” among others.
