The heres and theres

So:
A week ago Friday we went to my niece’s high school graduation in New Hampshire. We drove there during the day, attended graduation in the evening, drove about an hour back in a Syracusewards direction to Lowell, Massachusetts where we had a hotel room reserved, spent the night, and returned home Saturday. My other sister [...]

The Suds, as it is sometime spelled, is a men’s morris event, held annually by the Bouwerie Boys near Falls Village, Connecticut. It was my first event with the Binghamton Men, back in 2002, and I’ve been back since but not recently — I’m not quite sure when was the last time. Maybe 2006?
I’ll be [...]

May Day

Syracuse’s 29th May Day… had the usual Thornden, Hounds, Ribbonsteel, and Heartwood teams; had the not-yet-usual Wild Blue Morris; had unusual warmth, unusual wind, and a lack of rain until about five minutes after we finished in Thornden Park, said lack of rain resuming by the end of breakfast until late afternoon; had a very [...]

Gilbertsville

Looking back on past Gilbertsville tours, I tend to remember rain and chilly weather, though I’m not sure how well my memory would be confirmed by actual records. Anyhow, I’m certain this past weekend was atypical: high temperature in the mid 80s (F) on Saturday, no rain for the weekend.
At one point there was some [...]

The mundane lately

Kenny got his first tip on his green belt yesterday. I guess it’s mathematically possible for him to get the second tip a month from now and then test for brown belt in April, though I’m guessing May — or perhaps even later — will be more likely. That’s out of the intermediate levels and [...]

May Day, so good it happened twice

Thursday, the real May Day. Pretty much the usual Syracuse May Day things happened, for better or worse. The new morris team, officially still nameless, made its debut. Griffin’s Corners Morris, for the first time since 2001 (when it didn’t exist) didn’t perform at Thornden Park, but did appear once later.
It was nice to be [...]

This time

Both the unnamed new Cotswold morris team in Syracuse and the Binghamton Morris Men are done with their practice schedule — well, pretty much. Both teams will run through some dances the night before their first upcoming public performances.
The new team’s learned three dances in the Ilmington style — the only three dances, according to [...]

Syracuse Sporadic Cotswold Morris

It’s been 6 1/2 years, amazingly, since the demise of Salt Springs Morris, and since that time there’s been no Cotswold morris teams in the Syracuse area that take male dancers. Well, there’s GCM. But I’ve never succeeded in recruiting new dancers to that team.
The past few years I’ve thought maybe a seasonal team could [...]
