For the dojo we’re supposed to come up with a list of ten goals for 2009 — not exclusively martial arts goals, but goals of any and all kinds. I view these as not quite the same as resolutions, or rather as a particular type of resolution. These are not things we’re going to try [...]

Breadboarding
Not all our furniture cost big bucks. Wednesday morning I stopped at Syracuse University Excess Property and picked up a 30″x45″ Steelcase work table for $5. Managed to get it home — it barely fit in the car — and left it in the yard under a tarp until today, when I cleared a space [...]

$
They say consumer spending is down. You wouldn’t know it at our house.
The SX-150 is about the least of it. The most is the furniture. We have this old sofa that used to belong to Heather’s mom; it’s getting on in years and needs reupholstering. Or replacing. There’s a local furniture chain going out of [...]

Age of house
A few days ago I wrote:
I just discovered the county’s tax records say it was built in 1860, which given what I know of the property’s history seems to me to make more sense than the 1830s, but as far as I know either or neither could be correct.

Structure

Lower and deeper
Today we had the septic tank uncovered and pumped. Then we had the septic tank uncovered and pumped.
It’s presumably the first time this has been done. Heather’s grandfather, Marty, was of the old school of thought that a good septic tank never needs pumping. We being of a different mindset decided this should be, if [...]

At Home
This upcoming week is trash pickup week, when large piles of old mattresses, toilets, sofas, and other stuff appear along the roads in the town… and pickup trucks cruise the roads looking for stuff before the town picks it up. We’ve put our share out. I hauled out a lot of crap from the basement [...]

For a guy who doesn’t get enough exercise, I sure feel like I’m getting too much exercise
[Edited for better reference to morris team -- 19 Apr 2006]
Friday lunchtime: another six laps walking around the Carrier Dome. (That doesn’t count the fact that, from or to the Physics building, you have to walk halfway around the Dome to get to or from the entrance.)
Friday evening: New morris team.
Saturday morning: Karate.
Saturday afternoon: Binghamton [...]

They're gone
A week ago Sunday, during some brisk winds, one of our trees came down. It was a poplar, a tree inclined to fall over if it’s not careful where it’s going, and it was pretty much dead anyway.
Here you see it while it was still standing, marked with a green arrow:
The red arrows mark [...]
